The Red Wings played three games recently, 8-2 and 3-1 victories over Calgary and Buffalo, and a 4-3 overtime loss to Colorado. Playing up or down to the quality of their opponent is an article for another day, as today we are going to look at some of the team’s top performers over those three games.
Third Star- Goaltender Jimmy Howard
It’s very probable that no other player’s performance affects this team’s record more than Howard’s. Howard played all three of the aforementioned games, collecting 78 saves on 85 shots faced for a 2-0-1 record. For the season, he is tied for fourth in the NHL with a .928 save percentage, and his 2.34 GAA ranks fifth. With a defensive corps that is still searching for its identity and lacks a true shutdown pair, Howard’s play has kept this team afloat at times throughout the season. Howard has played 16 of the Wings’ 21 games and backstopped eight of the 10 wins.
Second Star- Center Dylan Larkin
Larkin is firmly rebounding from a down year last season. He collected two goals and three assists last week, and his 20 points on the season lead the team. Larkin’s 16 assists are tied for fourth in the NHL among centers, and he owns a much improved 52.6% faceoff win percentage.
First Star- Left Wing Andreas Athanasiou
Last week, Athanasiou really hit his stride. He collected three goals and two assists, and despite only playing in 11 of the team’s 21 games this season due to his contract holdout, only four players on the team have scored more goals than his total of five. “AA” is quickly emerging as another young building block to shore up the forward lines, should he re-sign after this year as his new deal makes him a restricted free agent at season’s end.
