Bulldogs offensive efforts not enough to beat No. 5 Xavier

Butler put up a tough fight against the No. 5 Xavier Musketeers Tuesday night. The Bulldogs put up 20 more shots and only had five turnovers, but still ended up losing 86-79. Foul trouble is ultimately what gave the Musketeers the game Saturday night. The 15-1 Xavier team made 16 more free throws than Butler attempted in the whole game.

Butler did show growth despite the loss, especially on the offensive end, putting together the best game this season away from Hinkle. The defense struggled to consistently get stops throughout the game, and still needs some work to truly be successful. Despite the rather large amount of shots missed and amount of fast break points allowed, the Bulldogs kept it close for relatively the whole game.

Looking ahead

Butler has to face No. 21 Seton Hall on Saturday. This will be the third consecutive ranked team to compete against Butler. Butler moving on and getting focused for that game is very important, especially with another challenge at No. 24 Creighton next week. Even with the improved offense, Butler will need to take better shots than it did against Xavier, even though Xavier’s 1-3-1 zone was very effective.
