Despite scoring in his return from missing 12 games with an upper-body injury, Matt Calvert’s goal was not enough as the Washington Capitals snap the Blue Jackets’ two-game winning streak with a 4-3 win. Others scoring for the Blue Jackets were leading point scorer Artemi Panarin and defensemen leading point scorer Zach Werenski.
Pierre-Luc Dubois extends his point streak to four games with two assists in Saturday’s loss to Washington. He now has one goal, five assists, and six points in that four-game span. Artemi Panarin adds on to his team points lead with a goal for his 20th point of the year. In a very disciplined game, Boone Jenner got the only two penalties of the night with two holding penalties in the second period. Calvert scores a shorthanded goal on the first penalty and Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin extended his league goal lead with his 19th goal of the year on the powerplay on the second Jenner penalty.
THE TOP LINE
The top line and top defensive pairings did the grunt work for the Jackets tonight, as Panarin and Dubois combined for three points and Werenski and Seth Jones each earned a point. Panarin and Jones were +2 while Josh Anderson, Dubois, and Werenski were +1.
QUOTE OF THE (POST)GAME
Here’s John Tortorella’s take on looking at the standings this early on in the season: “How many games have we played? I’m not going to lie. Later on, maybe in February, maybe you start looking at it. There’s no sense in looking at it right now, so no, I have other things to do, other than look at the standings.”
1. Alex Ovechkin (WSH, 1G, 4 SOG)
2. John Carlson (WSH, 2A, +1)
3. Brett Connolly (WSH, 1G, +1)
