Colts’ struggle continues in Jacksonville

Game: Indianapolis Colts @ Jacksonville Jaguars
Game Result: Jacksonville Jaguars 30, Indianapolis Colts 10

Jacoby Brissett was only sacked four times instead of 10, TY Hilton caught a touchdown and Leonard Fournette only had 57 yards on 20 carries. That’s the end of the bright sides for the Colts in this beat-down on the road. The defense was unable to generate a consistent pass-rush, as they finished the game with only a single sack, and Bortles had only his second 300-yard game on the season, again at the hands of the Colts.

Crippled Defense

The Colts defensive backs looked overmatch the entire game, as Marqise Lee and preseason star Dede Westbrook finished with over 150 of Bortles’ 309 passing yards. Rashaan Melvin’s absence crippled the Colts as they allowed Bortles to finish the day with a 74% completion percentage. The Colts totaled one quarterback hit on the day, dwarfed by the Jaguars eight. The team has struggled to generate a pass rush all season long, and this game was no different. Another issue where the Jaguars were significantly better was in the passes deflected department. The Jags finished with five, compared to the Colts’ one. This just isn’t enough for a team to slow down offenses.

Leonard Fournette has stumbled in recent weeks after a bursting onto the scene to start the season. The Colts did not make his day any easier, as he averaged only 2.8 yards per carry on the day. The Jaguars were lucky that the Colts were unable to stop the pass, because if they run into a defense that can stop both later in the season, things could get very difficult for them. However, if their offense can’t carry them, their defense will pick up the slack like they have all season long. The Jaguars were a blown coverage away from finishing this game 30-3. The Jags were frequently harassing Brissett into mistakes, and they forced Frank Gore into a rare fumble. Jalen Ramsey continued to be a monster on the outside, as he finished with five tackles, two pass breakups and an interception.

One feel-good story that can be taken away from this game is that of starting running back Frank Gore. He entered the game needing 49 yards to pass LaDanian Tomlinson for fifth on the all-time rushing list. He finished the day with 61, as he continues to be a consummate pro that is making a Hall-of-fame case with each passing week.

Looking Ahead
The Jaguars (8-4) continue their three game homestand against the Seattle Seahawks (7-4) as of this writing. In a tight division race with the Tennessee Titans, who also won today, every single game counts towards postseason seedings. The Colts (3-9) head to Buffalo to take on the Bills (6-6) who are coming off a 23-3 beat down against the New England Patriots. The Colts are jockeying for draft positions, while the Bills are attempting to swipe a wild card spot in the wide-open AFC. The San Francisco 49ers won their second game of the season, which increases the likelihood of the Colts getting a better pick.
