The question has been looming all off-season. Will the Cubs resign Jake Arrieta or go out and get another starter like Alex Cobb or top pitching free agent, Yu Darvish? With just three weeks until pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training, something must be done soon for so many free agents still looking for a new team.
Yu Darvish has narrowed his decision down to five possible teams he could land which include the Chicago Cubs, Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers, Milwaukee Brewers, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Darvish has received at least one five-year deal but no dollar amounts have surfaced yet.
As for the Cubs, they just signed veteran catcher, Chris Gimenez to a minor-league deal. This signing bolsters the Cubs recruitment for the ace as Gimenez and Darvish have an awesome relationship dating back to their days together in Texas. Within the last couple of days, the Cubs talks with Darvish and his representatives have greatly increased, but clearly, there isn’t an agreement yet. With all five of those teams linked to other targets like Jake Arrieta and Alex Cobb, we could very well see a trickle-down effect as talks start to pick up over the course of the next week. Time is ticking for many of these clubs to get their last-minute free agent acquisitions, and Yu Darvish could find himself on the North Side very soon which would wrap up an incredible off-season for the Chicago Cubs.
