Indy 500 Schedule and Preview

Indiana is home to numerous sporting events, but sitting alone at the top in terms of size and coverage is the Indy 500. The excitement, pageantry, tradition and spectacle of the world’s largest single-day sporting event is truly something to behold, and Hoosiers get a front-row seat to all of the action. Here are some important dates to mark on your calendar so you don’t miss any of the happenings at the track:

May 15-19: Practice
May 20: Qualifying
May 21: Pole Day
May 22: Practice
May 26: Carb Day / Indy Lights Freedom 100 Race
May 27: Legends Day
May 28: RACE DAY

This year’s race is shaping up around a lot of familiar faces, and one major new one–two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso. Alonso is slated to drive a Honda-powered Andretti Autosport/McLaren, news that caused waves throughout the open-wheel racing community. Former Indy 500 winners expected to enter include Helio Castroneves, Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Juan Pablo Montoya, Ryan Hunter-Reay and last year’s winner Alexander Rossi–all of whom are more than capable of adding to their number of wins in the 500. Montoya could jump into select company with his third win, while Castroneves could add himself to the prestigious four-time winners club alongside the legendary group of AJ Foyt, Al Unser Sr., and Rick Mears. Hoosier-born Conor Daly, a native of Noblesville, also gives fans a local driver to root for. Drivers, teams and sponsors will continue to make deals over the next few weeks and Blue HQ will strive to keep you up to date on all of the news at the track. So make plans for the Coke lot, start planning your traditional cookout with radio (because who wants to watch it in real time on TV?) and start getting “Back home again in Indiana” stuck in your head. We’re approaching Indy in the month of May.

My name is Tom, and I have been an avid hockey and Colts fan for most of my life. The lack of an NHL team here means I try to watch hockey any way I can, including a lot of nights as a youngster inside old Market Square Arena watching the Indianapolis Ice. I am excited to bring you my perspective on our current minor league hockey team, the Indy Fuel, and occasionally keep you up to date on their affiliate, the NHL Chicago Blackhawks. Additionally I enjoy shooting sports, and rooting for America in the Summer and Winter Olympics.
