Over the last twelve hours, multiple press releases have ignited the Matt Patricia coaching rumors even more in Detroit. According to the releases, sources close to the situation have the Patriots defensive coordinator planning to leave New England and become the next head coach of the Detroit Lions. The Detroit Lions front office has not commented on these rumors, as they have a few additional coaching interviews scheduled this week.

The rumors regarding Patricia to Detroit have been strong for nearly two seasons since Bob Quinn took the position as Lions general manager following twenty years with the New England front office. Quinn has strong ties to New England employees, hiring a few staff members to his team, and also completing two trades with the Patriots since taking the GM position in 2016.
Since his tenure in Detroit began, “BQ” (as Twitter refers to him) has made it clear that the time for the Lions is now, and he will take nothing short of winning. Contract extensions to players such as Matthew Stafford, Darius Slay, and Glover Quinn, in addition to the big signings of Rick Wagner and TJ Lang this past offseason, there is a strong foundation in Detroit that can win now with the right coach at the helm. It was evident that Quinn did not feel Jim Caldwell was the right fit, dismissing the winningest coach in Lions history following the end of the season.
If the rumors are to be true, Matt Patricia, 43, would bring to the Lions a strong coaching background, a hard work pays off mentality and a mindset that winning is of the highest importance. Since he took over as their defensive coordinator in 2012, the Patriots have finished in the top 10 in scoring defense every year. He would join up with a Detroit offense that finished 7th overall in points per game and 6th in total passing. His first orders of business would be to improve the Lions run offense along with their run defense, both of which finished near the bottom of the NFL rankings in 2017. With the release of their 2018 NFL opponents, the Detroit Lions are set to square up against New England at Ford Field sometime next season, making this coaching change even juicier.
The Patriots are bracing for DC Matt Patricia’s exit, and will likely become the Lions next HC. (via @ProFootballTalk)
