In the wake of the Alex Smith deal to Washington, the Cleveland Browns are left to evaluate who is on the market to fill the veteran quarterback position. Kirk Cousins has been the name on most sports reporter’s lips. Where will he go? What type of money will cousins get paid? Above all where does Cousins want to go?

Cousins seems to be invested in playing for a team that can be in contention. The money is important and Cousins will undoubtedly get a handsome price. Do the Browns have the money to pay Cousins? Yes. The Browns have over 100 million dollars in cap space. What they don’t have is the draw and credibility at this point for some more established players.

This brings us to the obvious choices that are on the table. AJ McCarron of the Cincinnati Bengals. McCarron is set to hit arbitration on Feb 15th due to an argument with the Bengals over the status of his free agency. McCarron believes he should be an unrestricted free agent and the Bengals are arguing he is a restricted free agent at this time. URFA have four years of playing time in the NFL and RFA have three accrued seasons but less than four. The Bengal’s argue the year they acquired McCarron he did not play his whole rookie season due to injury. McCarron states he was able to play and healthy but the Bengals put him unwillingly on the NFI list. This will make a difference on the outcome of McCarron’s next season and how much control he ultimately has over his fate.

McCarron seems to have the love of head coach Hue Jackson but can he lead this team until the heir apparent makes themselves known? McCarron filled in for Andy Dalton in 2015 and played 7 games. He completed 66% of his passes with six TDs and two INTs. He did face some adversity in his lone playoff game.

McCarron is less experienced than other veterans on the block such as Jay Cutler, Sam Bradford, Tyrod Taylor, Case Keenum and the fan favorite Josh McCown. However, he comes from Hue Jackson’s old team and there seems to be love between the two.

John Dorsey has amassed a focused football minded front office and they undoubtedly will be throwing all these names around in the near future. At this point, we can listen, watch and hope for the best. What that is no one seems to know yet.
