News broke Sunday that redshirt junior Basil Smotherman has decided to leave the Boilermakers program. According to Purdue basketball coach Matt Painter the decision was mutual. Painter cited Smotherman’s inability to meet the standards and expectations of the program. Smotherman opened the season on suspension due to an offseason arrest for possession of paraphernalia after a traffic stop in Hancock County. He missed both preseason events and the season opener against McNeese State. Only appearing in 18 games this season, he was able to average just 3.9 points over 12.1 minutes per game. It remains to be seen whether Smotherman will look to continue his career elsewhere.
