Welcome to Blue HQ Media’s “Recruiting Trail” series where we will be bringing you the latest on the top prospects for your team. Sit back and enjoy the ride as we take a look at today’s prospect, Kevin Easley Jr.
Easley is a local recruit, playing his high school ball in Indianapolis at Lawerence North. His story is one of trials and tribulations of massive proportions. When Easley was just 10 years old, his mother passed away suddenly from a heart attack triggered by chemotherapy she was receiving for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
In an interview with the IndyStar, Easley was quoted as saying, “My heart just dropped. It’s the worst feeling in the world.”
That memory has never left his mind as he works tirelessly to make his mom proud. It’s a feeling only someone who has suffered a tragic loss themselves can understand.
Easley was then forced to switch positions as other players grew to, and beyond, his own height. A player used to making his living close to the basket was now a wing. He embraced the challenge however, and received multiple scholarship offers from schools such as VCU, Indiana, Purdue and others.
In the end, Easley committed to VCU because of his relationship with then-coach Will Wade. That’s not really where our story ends however, as Wade made a sudden jolt from VCU to sign a six-year deal with LSU.
On April 5th, Easley took to twitter to announce he was decommitting from VCU and reopening his recruitment. Enter Indiana and Purdue.
While both schools would love to secure Easley for 2018 and beyond, it’s really anyone’s guess as to the next chapter in this incredible story.
